Medano
Pass, Great Sand Dunes
June
16, 2007
It was a beautiful
day for a Medano/Dunes Run. I was the only FSJ in our group, which
I knew would happen, and on the trail at all. : ( I had no issues,
other than running hotter than I wanted on the highway (topped out
just over 220, only once or twice at 75mph with the AC on) but it
stayed relatively cool on the trail. It was funny...everytime we
stopped, I opened the hood just to dissapate heat easier. Everyone
kept asking if I was okay. I told them when FSJ's stop, the hood
comes open. It's just a fact of life...it's a Jeep thing.
We had one
daring soul make the pass and dunes in his Suburban, and another
in a later-model Pathfinder. One of our group had a lifted Rubicon...he
did just fine. No one actually had any problems, just a little more
trail in spots than they wanted to take their stock rigs through,
but everyone made it without any major carnage.
The dunes were
neat, the water crossings not too deep, and a good time was had
by all. I did find where the oil was leaking...it soaked the bottom
of my Jeep on the way home. Looks like I'm repacking a timing cover
next weekend, in addition to the front hubs. :( Gotta be done before
Ouray....3 working weekends left!
