Related Links This trail tends to be somewhat narrow with a few rocky water crossings. Figure a couple hours for the trip. The organized trail run will start from Ouray by heading south and turning left at the beginning of Engineer Pass road, then winding your way over either Engineer Pass or Poughkeepsie Gulch trails to Animas Forks. Or you can head out of Silverton along 110 following the Alpine Loop signs to Animas Forks. From Animas Forks, head west towards California Gulch. Placer Gulch will be on your left in about a mile. You'll run across a small stream, but be sure to check depth before crossing. You'll drive through a long empty valley and about 2 miles along you'll turn left and climb switchbacks out of the valley and over into Picayune (Picayne) Gulch after about 2.5 miles when you reach the ridgeline. You'll cross a long flat area across Treasure Mountain before actually descending into the adjacent valley. After a little over 5 miles, the trail becomes rather steep and narrow so be careful. You'll reach FS 586 in another 6 miles or so where you'll turn right to head back to Silverton or left back to Animas Forks.
