Corkscrew Gulch

Rating: 5/10 Moderate

After reaching Corkscrew Pass at nearly 13,000' above sea level, you can return the way you came, head down Poughkeepsie Gulch, or head back to the highway by way of Corkscrew Gulch. The 2002 FSJ Invasion "Mini Alpine Loop" organized trail run will take this trail back home after a jaunt through California Gulch.

This trail gets its rating primarily for the steep, narrow, tight switchbacks you'll encounter early in the trail. You must be certain your brakes are in good condition prior to setting out on this trail or the "Mini Alpine Loop." After a couple miles you'll enter the trees as the trail flattens out somewhat. After a little over 3 miles, bear left and be careful of the yellow clay if it is wet because it'll be slippery. At almost 4 miles go straight and you will descend steeply and you'll see the tailings area being reclaimed to the left. Continue on through a few wider spots in the trees and follow the road to 550.
